Drawing for Fun – with kids

There were some wonderful goings on at Maker on Saturday mornings over 6 weeks in October and November. Rosie Gibson adapted her very popular adults’ class ‘Drawing for Fun’ for kids. Rosie bases her classes on the book ‘Drawing on the Right  Side of the Brain’ by Betty Edwards. Rosie says “our left brain is our bossy brain, which can have an annoying habit of telling us we’re rubbish at drawing!” She develops methods to quieten this critical, but sometimes self-critical faculty, encouraging the the more visual and creative right side to look more closely at its subject, take its time and develop the artists’ observational skills.

The 6 girls who joined Rosie found the work challenging at times, but always enjoyable, and were very encouraged by their growing skills in observation and the resulting drawings. During the classes there was an air of great concentration and developing self-confidence. Rosie also encourages her students by discussing artworks which they have done at home and brought in to show her.

As a teacher, Rosie makes getting together on a Saturday morning to draw seem like the very best way to start the weekend!

Rosie’s kids ‘Drawing for Fun’ classes received funding from the Common Good Fund and Community Culture Grant.
